In 'Signal Black' animated light softly radiates through a finely hand-cut filigree in concentric circles. It is subtle and dark. Like voices speaking through the ether, it is as if we are listening across a vast space to a distant and invisible event, the drop of a bead of energy onto water's surface. Everything is resonating.
'Signal Brass' is a slender illuminated panel of perforated brass hand cut by Rolinson. It is a tile like form that can be replicated or extended in a grid of fluctuating surfaces. The mixed media artworks from the two Signal Series (Black and Brass) are a collaboration between multimedia artist Esther Rolinson and artist-programmer Sean Clark in a sculptural light art shape.
In common with much of their collaborative work, including the award-winning installation 'Flown', 'Signal' began as a hand-made drawing by Esther Rolinson before being developed into a light artwork and then an Internet-connected digital artwork with the involvement of Sean Clark. 'Signal Black' is planned as a series of lightboxes silently resonating in a dimly lit space.
